A Back-to-School Lunch Idea and 5 Tips For Better Lunches
Back-to-school season is exciting—but let’s be honest, it’s also a lot. To lighten the load, we teamed up with our friends at Feeding Littles, an online education and resource platform that helps parents raise confident, intuitive eaters. They gave us this amazing lunchbox idea to kickstart back-to-school season:
Banana Roll-Ups “Sushi-Style”
This delicious snack is from their bestselling lunchbox inspo book: Feeding Littles Lunches
To make it, just spread sunflower seed or peanut butter on a tortilla, roll it around a banana(or mash the banana and spread on top of the nut butter), and slice into one-inch “sushi” rounds. Pair with edamame, plum slices, and snow peas for a colorful, balanced meal—tucked neatly into your favorite Stasher bag.
Quick Tips:
-
Sub a gluten-free tortilla if needed
-
For picky eaters, serve the tortilla + banana separately
-
Not into slicing? Serve the whole roll-up uncut for younger kiddos
5 Tips for Easier School Lunches
-
Keep it Basic and Balanced You don’t need to reinvent the wheel at lunchtime– repetition can be your best friend. Kids love familiar foods, and structure saves you time and avoids decision fatigue. When in doubt, follow this Feeding Littles formula: Starch or grain + protein + fruit + veggie + dip, dessert, or chips.
-
Stay Organized Set aside a dedicated part of your fridge and pantry for school lunch ingredients. Keeping your go-tos in dedicated spots ensures you’re not scrambling in the morning. As an added bonus, it also makes it way easier to see when you’re running low on kid favorites like apple sauce or string cheese.
-
Involve Your Kids One of the best ways to ensure lunches actually get eaten is to let your kids be part of the process. Ask what foods they enjoy most and invite them to help pick out a few favorites at the store. As they get older, they can even pack their own shelf-stable snacks the night before.
- Stock Up Having a few of your most-used lunch gear means fewer emergency dishwashing sessions—and fewer mornings spent hunting for that one clean container.
